What is Amazon SEO?

Amazon SEO — optimizing your listings to rank organically inside Amazon's A9 search algorithm — is the highest-ROI activity on the platform. Paid ads buy clicks for a day; an organic top-three ranking earns clicks every day at near-zero marginal cost. Yet most Indian sellers treat Amazon SEO as an afterthought to PPC. How Amazon's A9 algorithm actually works

Amazon's A9 ranks listings using two broad signals: relevance (does this listing match the query?) and performance (when shown for this query, does it sell?). Relevance is determined by indexing — having the right keywords in the right listing fields. Performance is determined by click-through rate, conversion rate, sales velocity and review profile.

A listing that indexes for a keyword but does not convert when shown for it will fall off the first page within days. A listing that converts at 25% but is not indexed for the keyword will never appear at all. Amazon SEO is the discipline of getting both right simultaneously — indexing aggressively for the right keywords, then optimizing every page element to convert when those keywords show your listing.

Keyword research for Amazon, not Google

Amazon keyword research is different from Google keyword research. The intent is purchase, not information. The volume distribution is more concentrated. The synonyms and modifiers people use inside a search box on the Amazon app are different from what they type into Google. We use Helium 10's Magnet and Cerebro, Brand Analytics search-frequency rankings, and the Amazon Suggest dropdown to build a complete keyword universe for every product — typically 200-800 indexed keywords per SKU.

Each keyword is scored on monthly search volume, current ranking, conversion potential and competition. We focus the highest-value real estate (title, first two bullets, main image) on the keywords with the best combination of volume and conversion potential, not just the highest volume. A keyword with 50,000 monthly searches and 2% conversion is worse than one with 8,000 searches and 18% conversion for almost every SKU.

On-page Amazon SEO: titles, bullets, A+, backend

Every listing field has a different job in Amazon SEO. The title carries the highest indexing weight and shows up in every search and ad — it gets the highest-volume primary keyword first, followed by the most important attribute (size, colour, count) and then a short secondary keyword. Bullets carry mid-weight indexing and benefit-oriented copy that converts. The description and A+ Content carry lower indexing weight but huge conversion weight — they handle objections.

The backend search-term field carries pure indexing weight with no customer visibility — perfect for synonyms, common misspellings, regional terms (Hindi keywords for Indian sellers), and competitor brand names where allowed. We fill all 250 bytes of the backend field on every listing with non-duplicate, indexable keywords. Done right, the backend search-term field alone can multiply your indexed keyword count by 3-5×.

Off-listing signals: reviews, sales velocity, external traffic

On-page optimization gets a listing indexed; off-listing signals determine where it ranks. Sales velocity is the strongest off-listing signal — listings selling more units per day will outrank listings selling fewer, all else equal. Reviews are second, with both count and recency mattering — a listing with 500 reviews and a flow of new ones outranks one with 500 reviews from three years ago.

External traffic is the underused third signal. Amazon rewards listings that drive traffic to themselves from outside Amazon — Google, social, email — because that traffic does not cost Amazon anything to deliver. We coordinate external-traffic campaigns through Amazon Attribution links, brand-referral bonus enrolment, and content marketing that pre-sells products before sending customers to Amazon. Brands that build external traffic consistently outrank brands that rely on ads alone.
